Buna boys and girls both undefeated in 1957 and win state titles

2-A

Buna

Buna defeated Seagoville, 69-31, in the 2-A final and Angleton, 59-26, in the semi-final at the state tournament.  The Courgarettes qualified for state for the 2nd time with regional wins over Jasper, 81-40; Bellville, 69-44; and Gatesville, 62-50.  Buna finished the year undefeated at 37-0 winning the second of back-to-back titles.  The Cougarettes “blew away” the competition all year  with an average victory margin of 31 points (the closest win was by 9 points).  The victory margin for 5 playoff games was 28 and included a 33-point win over Angleton in the semi-finals and a 38-point win in the final setting state records for points in the championship game and for a two-game series.  The semi-final win was noteworthy in that Angleton was the 1-A defending state champion and had its entire squad back in 1957 from the 1956 team.

Buna has made 6 appearances in the state finals winning titles in 1956, 1957, 1960, & 1961 and losing  in the finals in 1959 (to Abernathy) and 1971 (to Spearman).  The championship coach for all four titles was R.C.
